History

The name Campovecchio is quite widespread in the mountains (it also exists between Rocca Ricciarda and Montrago), above all in reference to large piece of land. In this case it refers to a village or an inhabited area.

Some historians think that the name could derive from the presence of an old military appropriation to control a road, since in the old military language “camp” meant “encampment”.

The houses indicate that the town has been populated for centuries.

As evidence of this, there is an ancient church dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, with a Romanesque typology; a single room with a stone facade and a bell tower in the back.

The road was intended to connect two important roads between Valdarno (Strada dei Sette Ponti / Cassia Vetus or Clodia) and Casentino (Flaminia Minor)- crossing the mountain chain at the Poggio della Basilica or Baselica.

The presence of the church dedicated to Saint Apollinaris (the patron saint of Ravenna denotes the passage of the Byzantines.

Having come down from the Casentino-Romagna Apennines, they had created a series of armed outposts on the ridge of the Pratomagno, controlling various transit routes in an attempt to counter the advance of the Longobard tribes.
